The onebillion Connection

Our current Holiday Season offer features a limited edition set of LiveCode books. What makes them a limited edition is the special cover design featuring onebillion, and the donation we are making from each sale to this organisation.

But who are onebillion, and why are we supporting them?

Non-profit organisation
onebillion is a not for profit organisation devoted to enabling children everywhere to receive a decent education, regardless of economic status. All of the profits from app sales are used to reach children in developing countries, where lack of resources makes a good education hard to obtain. In Malawi, onebillion have already helped establish 32 oneclass learning centres, providing apps in the local language, on tablets powered by solar power. In November 2015, they opened the first Ugandan oneclass. onebillion will help set up many more of these in Malawi and Uganda, and plan to pilot oneclass in other countries.

Not Just Developing Countries
Malawi isn’t the only country to benefit from the great apps written by onebillion. A recent pilot scheme in the UK, in a primary school in Nottingham, showed that the Maths App improved British children’s learning significantly vs more traditional teaching methods. It’s just a great way for kids to learn maths.

Built in LiveCode
onebillion create apps for children to take their education into their own hands. At their own pace, and in their own language. We are immensely proud that onebillion have chosen LiveCode to build these apps. You can see their case study about their incredibly successful Maths 3-5 app here. They chose LiveCode in part because of the ability to iterate over the code, and prototype live.

“Children are an apps harshest critic! If they don’t like it they simply close it! To build a successful app for children you have to develop and test in a cycle. LiveCode is fantastic for this. You can test with a child, see the barriers they hit, make a quick or even wholesale change on the fly and be right back in testing.”

Joining Forces
One billion children can turn the world upside down!
You can make this happen…
Basic literacy and numeracy are transformational for every child and their communities. onebillion.org are looking for more friends to help make this a reality. You can help onebillion transform the learning of one billion children by getting in touch with them through their website here. You can also show your support by purchasing a limited edition LiveCode printed dictionary and user guide set before the 23rd December. $1 from every purchase will go to onebillion.
