How to Run Your App in a Browser with HTML5!

LiveCode HTML5 Blog Splash

The modern web browser has become a fully-featured application platform – and nearly everyone has one.  If you can write a program to run in a modern web browser, you know that it can be run anywhere with no need to install it.

As of now, you can deploy your LiveCode apps to the web. Welcome to HTML5.

In July 2014, we concluded a really successful crowdfunding campaign to support porting the LiveCode engine to the web browser.  However, in order to make that possible, we needed to make a series of really important changes to the engine.  Thanks to our 818 generous backers (who will receive their rewards with the first stable release of LiveCode 8!), we were able to make the much-needed and greatly anticipated upgrades and improvements over the last year and are now able to show off the results.

With our latest developer preview of LiveCode 8 Community Edition, we’ve included HTML5 as an experimental deployment option for open source apps.  Deploying a LiveCode stack to a web page is so straightforward: just enable the “Build for HTML5” checkbox in your standalone settings and save your stack as a standalone as usual.

We’ve included an “HTML5 Deployment” guide in the LiveCode 8 dictionary. It includes detailed information about the features and limitations of the HTML5 engine and advanced information about how to embed stacks in your web pages. Unfortunately, not all stacks will be able to run successfully in the browser yet; please check the deployment guide for more detailed information about what’s supported at the moment!

You can download LiveCode 8.0.0 DP 4 and try it out now: http://downloads.livecode.com/livecode/

And remember, with LiveCode 8, we’re going to deliver not only the entire LiveCode Builder development system with flexible new widgets, but also a completely new deployment platform for your applications — all as free, open source software.  We wouldn’t be able to have achieved this without the generosity of our crowdfunding donors and commercial subscribers and we’d like to thank all of you for making it possible.

Not tested the html5 version yet but all seems to be running well within the projected timeframe, perhapse even better if you take into consideration the amount of reworking required to make this all possible. most defininitely looking forward to the stable release edition.

Hi perbi! As mentioned in the blog post, HTML5 deployment is currently available only in the Community edition of LiveCode. I am currently working on HTML5 deployment from LiveCode Indy and Business! Note that you will need an additional license to enable commercial HTML5 deployment.

Dear Peter, if I pay the option “HTML5 deployment” for $49, I will have INDY version HTML5?? best regards, Alvaro Abril, Colombia

Hi Alvaro! You can buy an HTML5-only commercial license for $499, which will give you LiveCode Indy Edition and the right to make commercial HTML5 standalone applications. If you have any more questions please contact our support team!
