What can I say. This conference was a blast from start to finish. Maybe not quite as great as a fully live in person event, but definitely the next best thing. One positive for our team in particular: although working to New York time meant some late nights, at least none of us were jetlagged while we were doing it! Another benefit of having an online event of course is that it is accessible to a wider audience.
The Speakers
As always, our speakers turned up and provided fabulous content, beautifully presented, on a huge range of topics. Considering they were presenting from all around the world with no special equipment, they did a fabulous job, with remarkably few technical issues. I know how much work goes into even a 7 minute presentation, so we hugely appreciate all the effort you guys put in. Sharing knowledge is a trait that is prevalent in our wonderful LiveCode community, and this conference is another great way that LiveCoders are sharing expertise and helping each other become better coders.
The Sessions
There were some splendid sessions on Day 3, to join the ones already mentioned in previous posts. Mark Waddingham provided a 90 minute talk plus Q&A on the Script Compiler, which was very well received. Some of the things said about it: ” This filled in a lot of blanks for me, especially as one who isn’t familiar with low-level coding. The explanation was clear and informative…  So much information!!! (And such an exciting prospect)… Really good roadmap and explanation, Mark. Great stuff!”
The Day 3 Keynote was from Mark Talluto and focussed on Appli, Canela’s amazing freshly launched No Code tool built in LiveCode under license from LiveCode Ltd. It was impressive to see how to build a simple app in minutes, deployed straight to the device using the Player system. No complex standalone building, just get your app straight into the hands of your users.
Some of your comments on this session: “Superb! …Â Well prepared. (Kevin was answering some questions in the chat while Mark continued speaking!) Good visuals…Â Very clear presentation of an innovative use of Livecode.“
Another presentation that really stood out for me was the 7 minute talk from Craig Newman – I say talk, but really, it was a walk round the factory floor. Craig showed us how LiveCode controls some complex and rather dangerous looking machinery to precisely machine metal strips into bends or add notches where desired.
A comment on this talk: “the most amazing use of LiveCode I’ve ever seen!“.
Another standout session was the panel, discussing Web vs Native apps. Has Web killed off Native?Kevin Miller, Mark Talluto, Richard Gaskin and Andre Garzia argued for the relative merits of Web vs Native, and what that actually means in today’s world of hybridization. Great questions were asked, great answers were given, occasional cats appeared on screen. The conclusion? Maybe not yet.
What you said about this session: “A very interesting conversation with insights into how I can future-proof my apps… Provocative!“
The Recordings
There is now a wealth of recordings on topics as divergent as using Docker with LiveCode, how to use AWS, getting your app into the Mac App store, creating Web apps, REST Api’s, LiveCode Server… I could go on. If you want a flavour of what was delivered go here. These recordings will be a fabulous resource going forward, and the beauty of holding the conference on zoom is that the quality of these recordings is high. They will appear in ticket holders account in the coming days together with all associated materials.
Your Next Fix
Are you, like us, sad it’s over? Are you feeling withdrawal and looking forward to the next event? Have no fear. We aren’t leaving you out in the cold. We will be running a year long LiveCode Global event starting in May, titled “The Year of Reinvention“. You can join in and learn about all the new features as they happen and how to use them, plus join in a monthly bonus Q&A with the top brass – (if you get your ticket before May 5th we’ll even throw that Q&A in for free.)
Thank you!
So much work went into making this a fantastic event. I would like to thank all who took part, the speakers, our team and the attendees. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. See you all next time!
