Fancy some Good News?

We’re all tired of hearing about the virus, living with the virus, taking precautions against the virus and seeing nobody. With still months of lockdowns and hardships ahead, we need something great to look forward to. How about a LiveCode Conference?! Not a virtual one, a real one with real people where you can get together and bing talk LiveCode over a latte. Sound good? Ready to burst into song? Lets all hear it for…

New York, New York, we can make it there…

in 2022. We’re not crazy, this year is probably not sensible. Next spring, April 2022, pack your bags, pick up your vagabond shoes and head for the city.

Why now?

In these difficult times, this is a positive thing for the whole community to rally round. As we drive through the last few months of the pandemic we’ll have something great to look forward to next spring. If you all feel the same way about this as our team does, this will be the best conference ever – I’ve really noticed smiles on everyones faces as we’ve started planning this and a lot of chat about New York and fun times to come in our meetings. We all need a bit of uplift right now!

What’s so great about a LiveCode Conference?

Dude, you haven’t been at one or you wouldn’t be asking. It’s a fabulous way to extend your knowledge, get new ideas, network for your business, meet other LiveCoders, and talk LiveCode until your eyes bubble. Like any conference, some of the best stuff happens in the corridors. We’ll have speakers from inside and outside the company covering topics from the latest technical advances to novel ways of using LiveCode for business or pleasure. It’s a two way street. You learn from us, we learn from you. Our team always come away from a conference with new ideas, and you will too.

Is there an online element?

Yes, in spades! We’ll be running two online courses in advance of the conference itself, one for beginners and one covering more advanced concepts. These will take place on one afternoon every month starting in March 2021. We will also, as always, be livestreaming the conference itself and recording it for posterity. You’ll be able to watch remotely if you can’t get to the Big Apple, and if you do attend live, get the recordings of all the sessions you couldn’t make because you haven’t yet managed to clone yourself and be in two places at once. And finally, as a little extra bonus, included with the All In ticket bundles and Full Price Tickets, a free half hour online zoom 1-1 session. Book it in advance of the conference and spend half an hour unravelling difficult issues with one of our experts.

Why a Crowdfund?

Conferences are expensive. Booking a venue, paying for catering, buying flights and accommodation for the team, it’s a big commitment. Pretty much we know what we will need to cover in order to get to break even, less than that amount and we are basically paying you to come. Which is great, and we would if we could… but a crowdfund does guarantee that we get that minimum amount.

So what’s on offer?

First and foremost, tickets! Get your ticket to LiveCode New York 2022. Snap up one of the limited quantity Earlybird tickets or splash out and show your support for LiveCode with an All In Bundle. Book dinner with the CEO (quick! those tickets always go fast!) and secure your place at the Evening Entertainment. If you can’t get to New York in person – or even if you can but you want to start now! – get one or both of the online training courses we’ll be running all year, and/or buy the simulcast of the conference itself.

What’s the Backup Plan?

In the unlikely event that travel is still not possible in spring 2022 and/or we cannot hold the conference safely, we’ll hold the event online on the specified dates AND we’ll reschedule the live conference for a later time. Your ticket will remain valid for any such rescheduled conference. We don’t think we’ll have to do this, but if its needed, the plan is there.

Why New York?

It’s a great, vibrant place well situated for many of you and easy to get to. We’ll be looking for a fabulous centrally located venue (if you have ideas for this and live locally, drop us a line).

It’s going to be great. We can’t wait to see you there!

3 days of LiveCode Live for all levels.

3 days of conference sessions over 2 tracks equaling 42 hours of solid learning. That’s a whole lot of learning at all levels, great for kickstarting your LiveCode career or finetuning and building on your existing knowledge. Attend practical sessions and learn from the world’s top LiveCode Experts, get the latest on LiveCode Technology from the LiveCode development team, and work on your projects in the ever-popular 1-1 developer sessions (this is when you get to sit down with one of our devs and work with them on your project). Join the Keynote by Kevin Miller for announcements on the future and a roundup of progress to date. Attend sessions by our CTO Mark Waddingham, and hear from the rest of the team on their special areas of expertise. We’ll be inviting all our favorite external speakers back plus lots of new ones with interesting new topics. It will have been 3 years since our last get together so there is going to be so much to say and catch up on. It promises to be a jam packed few days full of extremely valuable content for any LiveCoder.

Meet old friends and make new ones in New York City

This is probably what we are looking forward to the most after the hard times we have all faced. We can’t wait to meet you (actually standing face to face with you, crazy). A LiveCode conference is a welcoming place with networking opportunities built into the conference, you’re sure to walk away from New York with far more connections (friends) than when you arrived!

A great location in one of the best cities in the world

Ok, we are not quite ready to share the conference venue with you but we have been looking at 3 or 4 central locations all of them more than suitable for a great event. Whichever we pick we’ll ensure it is accessible with plenty of space for two speaker tracks, all the one-to-one sessions and workshops we’ll be running and that it has great wifi. We can’t make a final decision on the venue until we know this event is successfully funded. You will not run out of things to do in NYC. If it’s your first time there are countless tourist must do’s and if you’ve been before there is always more to see, new bars and eateries to discover. I wish we didn’t have to wait until 2022, we really can’t wait.

In person conference ticket options

IF you are quick you can pick up one of our early bird tickets with discounted ticket rates. We only have a few of these available.

This is very much a hybrid event, and it’s kicking off in March 2021, with two great online courses. Plus of course we will livestream the main event next April, and you can sign up to get this whether you are attending in person or not.

Course 1: The Beginners Training Course.

This one is for you if you are just at the start of your LiveCode journey. Our hugely experienced and popular Elanor Buchanan will be taking you through the basics, teaching what you need to know to be an effective LiveCoder. You will learn by creating a game together, and in the process cover essentials like:

  • UI design
  • adding and storing data
  • coding logic
  • using data grids
  • and more…

The beginners course will have 13 sessions, held once a month between March 2021 and March 2022. All sessions will be recorded and available for review in your LiveCode account. Sessions will be held from 4pm – 6pm UK time, on the last Thursday of the month. Each session will be in a two part format, with a break in the middle during which you will have the opportunity to socialise and chat with other attendees.

Course 2: The Advanced Training Course.

This one is for you if you have been coding for a while and would like to expand your knowledge. The aim of this training is to cover some of the trickier areas of coding, that you might want to explore later in your coding career. The course will be headed up by Panos Merakos with guest appearances from Kevin Miller, Mark Waddingham and other LiveCode developers. These are just a few of the goodies he has in store:

  • Signing Apps for Distribution. Looking at what is needed to get your app distributed on Mac via the Mac App store or outside the store, and how you approach code-signing on Windows.
  • How to Build LiveCode from Source. Fancy getting down and dirty with the LiveCode Engine? This session will demonstrate how to fix a simple issue in the LiveCode source code.
  • Login and LiveCode Server. Looking at creating a simple Login system that uses LiveCode Server and Oauth.
  • Wrapping an API. Use LiveCode Builder to wrap external code and add functionality to your app that LiveCode doesn’t natively offer.
  • The Browser Widget and Javascript. How to do cool stuff with javascript within the browser widget.
  • More topics TBC.

As for the Beginners course, this will also be 13 sessions, held once a month between March 2021 and March 2022. All sessions will be recorded and available for review in your LiveCode account. Sessions will be held from 4pm – 6pm UK time, on the last Friday of the month. Each session will be in a two part format, with a break in the middle during which you will have the opportunity to socialise and chat with other attendees.

***COURSE UPDATES***

We’ve added more sessions to our beginners and advanced online sessions

20 Years. The Story of LiveCode

(Beginners & Advanced course)
With LiveCode (Revolution) version 1.0 having shipped 20 years ago this year, our CEO Kevin Miller celebrates this major anniversary by telling the story of LiveCode since the early days. He will tell tales of creating the platform in a small flat in Edinburgh, the many significant events and milestones, significant moments for our team members and our customers. This session will be filled with personal stories, successes, nail biting moments and even the disasters. This is the untold story from behind the scenes. If LiveCode has been a part of your life for much or even all of this time, then this is a session absolutely not to be missed! Join our CEO and celebrate 20 years since v1.0.

A Business App from Scratch – Best Practices

(Advanced course)
Two members of our team recently had the opportunity to develop a new client server business application from scratch using LiveCode as part of a service project. In this session they explore all the best practices for how to go about structuring building an application of this scale from scratch. Topics include using Levure and GitHub to manage team members working on the source code, choosing and designing the database, creating templates for the UI and structuring secure client-server communication. This session is a great opportunity to learn from the pros before you create your next big LiveCode project.

Games Night – LiveCode edition

(Advanced course)
Work and Play time are combined in this special edition of Games night. In this collaborative session we invite you to send in any games you have created or indeed create specifically for this session. Together we will spend a bit of time playing each game and discussing the code behind the game. All game stacks will be shared with all participants so you can play along and learn from the code written. Prizes will be on offer for the best game as voted by the session participants.

LiveCode Engine Hackathon

(Advanced course)
Ahead of this session we will invite you to vote on a list of features you would like added to the LiveCode engine. The feature with the most votes will not only go into the engine for your benefit, we will show you how we did it in this LiveCode Engine Hackathon session. Take another step along your journey to becoming a LiveCode Engineer!

Taking the dread out DataGrid (again)

(Advanced course)
The DataGrid! It’s an immensely powerful feature, but even the most seasoned LiveCoder may break out in a sweat when it is mentioned. Yet it doesn’t need to be so. The day DataGrid no longer gives you that sinking feeling you know you are in a good place! In this session we will look through some of the most useful DataGrid features including the latest features added in our DataGrid2 project. You will be building beautiful lists with native like bounce and swipe animations in no time!

Building for AI and the Cloud

(Advanced course)
In this session we will demonstrate some solutions to the technical challenges involved in creating an AI based cloud app deployed to multiple platforms. We’ll talk about how to integrate Python AI libraries, structure an app to allow it to perform multiple processing operations in the background, server setup and much more.

Understanding And Using REST APIs

(Advanced course)
If you’ve ever investigated getting data from a source on the internet such as Twitter or GitHub you’ve probably come across Rest APIs. In this session we will guide you through everything you need to know about using Rest APIs in your project. From being able to read API documentation correctly to implementing it into your LiveCode project. Rest easy – all sessions will be recorded so you can come back to it again and again.

HTML5 – Hands on with the Next Generation of the Technology

(Advanced course)
We have made significant advancements in our HTML5 technology and we are excited to share that with you. Expect demos, expect performance gains, expect feature improvements.

+

Zoom Coffee Breaks with our Team

(Beginners & Advanced course)
We’ve already announced that we will be having Zoom breaks during these live sessions but what we haven’t announced is most of our team will be joining in these sessions. Expect to find Mark, Kevin, Michael, Ali, Elanor, Panos and many more in these break sessions. We love chatting with you at the live events and we hope these Zoom coffee breaks will give us all that opportunity to do that again soon. First one starts in March (next month).

***

The Simulcast

42 hours of talks by the best LiveCoders around, wrapped up and delivered to a computer near you. If you can’t get to New York in person, we will be livestreaming the event as well as recording it. You will have the opportunity as a remote attendee to ask questions and participate in all the Speaker sessions. As this is a two track event, even if you are coming to the live conference you might well want to get the Simulcast so that you can view the recordings of the sessions you missed. You can also relive the best events you attended. All speaker sessions are recorded so you can watch again and again, and you will receive any materials, code samples etc provided by the speaker. What more can we say? If you can’t make it there, you can still get the full New York experience.

The 1-1 Bonus Session

Included free with any All In Bundle or Full Price ticket. Book half an hour of zoom time during 2021 with one of our team members. Discuss tricky issues, do some one to one learning, get your LiveCode problems solved. Together you can do a lot in half an hour.

We’ve got you covered.

Not only are we going to put on a great LiveCode event in NYC in 2022, we are creating beginner and advanced content to get your conference juices flowing every month between now and the conference. Choose between our in person conference, our online course events or both.

You can buy ticket only, add catering, add 1-1 sessions, add evening entertainment… or if you want the whole lot take advantage of the better pricing with our all in ticket bundles. The all in ticket bundle includes our online conference events that you can enjoy every month from March 2021 all the way through the live conference in 2022. These sessions are worth a shout out of their own. You can book an hour with one of our expert team, face to face, one to one. What do I get if this campaign is successful?

LiveCode will put on a great conference in New York, in 2022. We do also need your support at this time to keep LiveCode thriving through the remainder of the pandemic.

When is the conference happening?

We are planning for 25th-27th April, inclusive, in 2022.

When are the online courses happening?

The online courses will start on Thursday, 25th March 2021 (Beginners Course) and Friday 26th March (Advanced Course), and continue on the last Thursday and Friday of each month until March 2022. Note, there will be some adjustment to the dates in December, to allow for Christmas.

Is this an all or nothing campaign?

No. Payment for products will be taken as purchases are made. However if we don’t make enough to put on the conference at all we will issue refunds for ticket purchases made.

What if its not safe to hold the conference in April 2022?

We will hold the conference online instead, and reschedule the live conference for a later date. All tickets for the live conference will remain valid for the rescheduled event.

Why are you announcing a conference this far in advance?

The dates for this event fit well with a natural point at our product engineering schedule. That’s why there will definitely be an event on these dates (even if it did end up having to be online). We’ve launched this campaign now because this is basically how far in advance we normally start planning. Arranging a conference takes a lot of organizing, with venues to be found and booked and speakers to arrange. The earlier we book a venue the more choice we have. If we wait for the world to open up, I can guarantee the world and his wife will be booking venues in New York for next spring. Right now, there are some great venues available, centrally located with all the facilities we need.

What happens if the campaign only partially funds?

To do a great job of the conference we need it to fully fund. If it partially funds we will still go ahead with the online elements and consider what we can do, if anything, in terms of a live conference.

When will the product I purchased appear in my account?

All of the processing for this campaign is manual (ie done by real humans). It may take us up to 2 business days to put your reward into your account, we ask for your patience. We will try to do it more quickly. If you still don’t see your purchase after 2 working days, please email us to ask about it.

I just purchased and its not showing on the campaign page

It can take up to 5 minutes for your purchase to be posted to the campaign page. If it’s been longer than that and it’s still not showing, please let us know.

I don’t want to be named on the backers page

If you prefer to be anonymous, untick the box at checkout that says “add my name to the backers list”.

What happens if I book my ticket and nearer the time I discover I can’t come? Can I get a refund?

If you let us know 3 months or more before the conference takes place, you will be entitled to a full refund. Between 1 and 3 months before, we’ll issue a 2/3rds refund. Cancellations within one month of the conference will not be refundable except in exceptional circumstances.

For more details on these new sessions check out this blog post

Campaign Update – 25 Jan @ 14.55pm

Team LiveCode is really excited about New York in 2022. However, I understand that some of you are nervous. Covid is still on the loose, vaccinations are just beginning, there are questions around travel, hotel stays, all sorts of uncertainties still. I’m positive enough that these issues will be resolvable by April 2022 that we are planning a live conference, and to help you feel positive too, we’re adding an option to our conference funding campaign: You can now buy an upgradable online bundle, for just $299. You’ll get the online courses starting in March, and at any time between now and next January you can upgrade to a full attendance ticket at the Early Bird rate, for the difference in price.

To reflect the lower initial cost of the tickets we’re reducing the campaign target right now to $50,000. As long as we sell enough upgradeable tickets by 9th February we will be able to make the commitment to the event.

What’s the news? Are you going ahead with this even though it didn’t get fully funded until after 6pm on the 9th? It would be good to give us an update.

    Steven Crighton - February 11, 2021 reply

Hi Sean, I can confirm that the campaign has been successful and all events will be going ahead. We sent out an email yesterday confirming this, sorry if you didn’t get. I have since added a further campaign update to the page to make this clear.

We will be making some website changes shortly, fleshing out the course descriptions and letting those who purchased them know how to access them.
