Source Licensing
What is the service?
Source licensing gives you the ability to directly modify the LiveCode engine for your own specific purposes, and build a closed source app from that engine. It gives you the security of “owning” the engine, giving you faster development paths and insurance for the future. Need an unsupported feature immediately for use in your app? Add it yourself and start selling it, without waiting for the feature to arrive in the mainstream LiveCode edition.
Source licensing is also a form of Escrow, giving you the confidence that you will always have access to that particular engine for use in your app, whatever happens. Protect your business critical applications, futureproofing against the unexpected.
Researchware
Peace of mind
“Researchware makes simple and powerful tools for qualitative research. Our products depend upon LiveCode. We simply could not develop our products effectively in any other conventional language. So, it is essential to us to ensure that we will always be able to use LiveCode. LiveCode Source Licensing provided exactly that.” – Paul Dupuis
What we supply
Source licensing is per named product. Tell us what app you want to modify using your license and we will provide a contract for that specific app.
You will be able to modify source code to fix bugs or add features without waiting for a build from LiveCode Ltd. If you aren’t yourself familiar with modifying the engine source you can also hire a skilled contractor to do this for you, for the app named within the agreement.
Manage risk in your business. No-one can predict the future. What would happen to your mission critical app if for any reason LiveCode Ltd were no longer maintaining the software? This is a perpetual license, you will always have access to the version of the engine you have a source license for. Archive it as escrow, an insurance policy for your peace of mind.
Gain access to fixes the day they are made, no need to wait for a build.
You will receive access to an entire major version series of Livecode. For example your source license would give you access to the entire 8.x series if that is the version you want to maintain.
Commercial access to source – unlike the open source build, you can protect your own modified code and deploy your app commercially.
Not every feature is suitable for the entire community. No need to have your patch accepted by LiveCode Ltd, simply apply it yourself to your own private engine.
FAQ
Any person or organization who has a need for flexible development not constrained by the LiveCode Development team roadmap, or anyone desiring the security of owning the source for their app.
A source code license allows you to:
Get Your App to Market Faster
If your app needs a feature that is not yet supported, you can add it yourself, steal a march on the competition and avoid delays.
Add features no-one else has
Perhaps you have a very niche app with a requirement for features that most of the development community don’t greatly need. You can add them for your own use, without reference to the wider community.
Resolve issuesÂ
Hit a path critical bug? Remove the roadblock yourself, rebuild and continue your development.
Insure for the future
Source code escrow is risk mitigation. It means that whatever happens, you will always have access to the code your mission critical app is built on. You are not reliant on LiveCode Ltd supporting that code, in the event for example of a merger, acquisition or other unforeseen circumstances.
The Source Code License costs $10,000 per named app, for a given major version of LiveCode. For an introductory period until 30th April 2016 only we are making this license available for $7,500.
This license is non-transferrable, not for resale, it may not be used to modify any app other than that named on the agreement, and may not be used by any other entity than yourself or a contractor hired by you specifically to work on the named app in your agreement.
Yes, you must also hold a normal LiveCode subscription license (Indy or Business) in order to purchase a source code license.
Please contact us with the name of your app, and the version of LiveCode you would like the source code license for. We will draw up a contract for you and send it for your review. If you are happy with that both parties will sign, and you will receive access to the nominated version of the LiveCode engine on payment of the specified fee.
