The first German book on LiveCode is out now!

The small but growing German LiveCode community has received a boost with the first book about “Eigene Aps programmieren” – “Programming your own Apps” in German arriving on the market. It was published at “Rheinwerk Verlag”, the biggest and most important computer book publisher in Germany. The book is about the idea of programming in general and the fascination about LiveCode as the ideal platform to start with it. It is intended for all people who are just curious if they might be able to build their own app:

  • Screen designers who have been afraid of coding before
  • younger people who are looking for an easy way to get started
  • or just those who had thought before that programming was too difficult for them.

“What is programming?” is the first question the book raises. It gives the readers an idea of the main concepts of bringing objects and elements on the screen to life. “Programming is a lot easier than you might think!”. This promise can be kept thanks to LiveCode. The first example – building a smartphone app with analog clock and news overview – can be made completely without writing any code, in just a few minutes. Then the ideas of setting properties by script, using variables, conditions and loops are carefully introduced step by step – with lots of examples the reader can copy and build on. A dice rolling machine, predicting lucky numbers, a memory game, a text analyzer, a calculator, hangman – all these scripts are easy to understand – and they only need a few lines of code. In the end some bigger projects like a Master Mind clone, a multimedia quiz or an animated game are developed – and the last part of the book describes the process of publishing LiveCode apps to mobile devices or making desktop standalones.

The book has been on the market for six weeks now and it is selling well. Some early reviews say

“LiveCode is a great discovery – why haven’t we heard about this earlier?”

There is hope for the German LiveCode community!

I have also started a new German language LiveCode blog, for German speaking beginners or professionals to get together and discuss LiveCode in their own language. If German is your language and you like LiveCode or would like to learn more about it – come and join!
